'You know how sometimes, you have these moments when everything in your life just falls into place in one perfect moment and you look around and think, this is it; this is what life is about, this exact, perfect moment in life that I'm living right now. You may not be rich, or have a job you love. But something in your life, your family, a friend, your dog who loves you unconditionally, or your partner/wife/husband/lover, something or someone just occasionally breaks through the stresses of the everyday bullshit and makes you stop and smile and think....oh yes. This, this moment right here, is what it's all about. That's how I felt every second of every minute when I was with Pearl. She is the stars, the sun, and the moon. The butterflies, the rainbows, the puppies, the music, the chocolate, the soft cushions, spring flowers. The jacket that keeps you warm on a cold winter's day. She is everything that is beautiful in this world.' Charlie is exactly the kind of guy dads want their daughters to bring home. Reliable, loyal and devastatingly sweet, any girl would be lucky to have him. Or so his mum frequently says. In the small coastal New Zealand town where he was born and grew up though, love has so far managed to elude him, and he passes his days behind the counter of the local bookshop working for a boss suffering from the early onslaught of dementia. Then fiery Pearl blows into the bay, nursing a broken heart and a tragic secret. She's determined to see out the winter in her Grandmothers run down beach house, with nothing but wine and the cry of gulls to disturb her solitude. Their paths cross after she falls asleep in the bookshop, and their resulting love will devastate a town and leave no one untouched. Charlie and Pearl is a story of unconventional love; of finding that spare part you never knew you were missing, and of what happens when love is simply not enough.

When I first saw this book, I almost passed it by, but something in the cover drew me in. The hands together forming a heart, but the photo itself being different shades of gray. I knew instantly that this would would be an unforgettable book once I'd read the full synopsis. I read....A lot.. So I knew straight away something was not right with Pearl. I had my guesses, and later on, they were confirmed. This story captures your heart, and while it squeezes it painfully, it's the real love that Charlie has for Pearl that keeps you reading. He sticks with her until she finally has enough. I don't want to give away any spoilers, so I will stop there. Charlie has some wonderful surprises up his sleeve for Pearl and gives himself to her so freely and gives her the life she deserves to have. To me, the ending of the book was perfect. There was no other way it could have ended in my opinion. Although some may not have liked it, I don't see how it could have ended any other way. Charlie made a decision for both he and Pearl, and I totally get it.. I GET IT. This book made me cry a few times because of the characters sacrifices and angst.

I also love the fact that this book takes place in New Zealand. I have been to NZ and to read about the places that I've been to there brought back many great memories. :)

Charlie and Pearl edition by Tammy Robinson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Charlie and Pearl by Tammy Robinson kicked my backside. Don't misunderstand the "kicking my backside" comment, this is a wonderfully crafted book. The plot and characters are well developed, the writing flows, the reader is gently pulled in and before they know it hooked. For me, the ending was brilliant.

Here's the thing, had I a clue of Pearl's two secrets I would have skipped reading it. The reading of this cuts too close and too soon to family reality. It's a tricky thing for a writer, you don't want to give Pearl's secret away in the back cover description, at the same time I wish I had known...which would completely ruin the read for readers. Such a conundrum!!

All of that said, I highly recommend this book. Tammy Robinson is so very talented and I look forward to reading her other works.
Honestly? This is a really good read. I picked it out on a whim and I am glad I did - I loved it. Tammy has captured a slice of life in small-town New Zealand (being a Kiwi myself I can tell you that it is accurate!). I found myself drawn into the lives of the characters and cheering them along. It was sad, funny and warming. Didn't see the ending coming that way though - well written!

I'm off now to purchase the other three books and see if they are as good as this one. Well done Tammy, hope you keep writing and more people discover your work.
Not normally a book I would have purchased, but I'm thrilled that I did. I simply couldn't put it down. A beautiful, heart-felt story of love, loss and acceptance. One of the things that will stick with me for a long time is the feeling of reality with the characters, and beauty of the scenery as described by the author. By the end I felt I knew Charlie and Pearl, and that I had walked the beaches, and been a part of the laughter, as well as their pain.

With all great books it's difficult to write a review without spoilers. Highly recommended, but do have a box of Kleenex handy as it is an emotionally powerful read. I smiled, I laughed and I cried.
From the very first paragraph I knew this book was special. The descriptions of people, place, and feelings, were so keenly observed and atmospheric. Somehow the author manages to fill in details of the present and the past seamlessly without taking us away from the main plot of the book. The little asides about all the characters helped make them come alive, they felt like real people, like I was glimpsing into their lives. I loved the anecdotes about her grandmother, and all the NZ traditions and food, the culture, and the things they did as kids. And Charlie, wow, how can you not love him? I admire the way the author wrote a hero that isn't the norm, a hero with little love handles, and a cute self deprecating sense of humour. He's not what you expect, and I just loved him. Often with a 2 person point of view book, you can get lost with who is who, but not in this book. Charlie and Pearl are written completely differently, consistently through the entire manuscript. This book is full of life, and love, heartbreak, and hope. I never read books twice, but I will be reading this again. It's truly special.
Charlie runs the local bookshop and looks after the owner who suffers from dementia. He has a close relationship with his mom, is well-liked by locals at the bar, but isn't really going anywhere with his life--until he meets Pearl. The moment he meets her, he's in love and seeks to find a way to get her attention. Pearl's reaction is a bit more reserved. After a bad relationship and traumatic experience, she has escaped to her grandmother's beach house in an attempt to come to grips with her life. She isn't looking for love, but finds it with Charlie.

Charlie and Pearl is an easy read; I read it in a day. As their relationship unfolds, there are tender moments, humor, and arguments that are typical in any relationship. But, their relationship is anything but typical. Pearl has a very good reason for pushing Charlie away, but at the same time, she can't resist him. Charlie loves openly, honestly, holding nothing back. He's exactly what Pearl needs, but she continues to fight her feelings until she can't fight any longer.

I downloaded this book AGES ago, but just now chose to read it. I'm so glad I did. Even though I was wiping away tears by the end of the book, I found the ending surprising, but fitting. It's the kind of book that makes you feel honored to have been a part of the story, even if it was for only the few hours it took to read it. There are some grammatical errors, so if this is something that bothers you, consider yourself warned. The errors certainly didn't prevent me from enjoying the story and I had to give it 5 stars. Loved it!
