Sanguine Eyes, by J.K. Walker, continues the Salt Lake After Dark series. In this chapter of this ongoing saga, Walker masterfully draws the reader into Jazz's world as it crumbles around her. As the story progresses, Jazz loses one thing after another that is important to her - I would expound on this more but will refrain from doing so as to avoid mentioning any spoilers. Suffice to say, Jazz world is shaken more so than it was when she first learned she was a were-leopard. I also appreciate Walker's ability to narrate a good fight scene. With clarity and precision, Walker provides just enough detail with the appropriate pace to fully immerse the reader.
Readers of this series will enjoy this latest addition. However, those who are new can read this installment and fully appreciate and enjoy the story without missing a beat.

Walker writes crime drama with a twist and supernaturals without stereotyping. Everything in this tale weaves together, building on what came before it and leading her readers towards a climactic ending. There is an easy flow to this story that keeps you hypnotized by the tale. The story itself is also exciting and unique. I was completely wrapped up in the storyline. Walker threw me for a loop that I would have never seen coming in a million years. I also appreciate the passage of time in this series. The stories don’t all take place one on top of the other, but rather over a larger span of time. It makes everything easier to believe than if everything were to have gone from perfect to hell in a hand basket overnight.
I am very intrigued with Walker’s method of character development. By telling this story from the main character’s point of view you get to know her inside and out. The “I thought …” vs “I said…” moments really help you get to know Jazz and those close to her. The intimate friendships in this novel (and the series as a whole) are so inspiring. They really shine through in this instalment, giving the reader hope even when there is little left. I’ve also completely fallen for one of the secondary characters in the series (who makes a rather small appearance in this particular instalment but is mentioned many times). I keep rooting for him. Walkers characters are all so well developed that you can’t help but falling in love with them.
As a whole this was a very exciting addition to the Salt Lake After Dark series. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the supernatural with a bit of an adult twist, but I would definitely suggest reading the rest of the series first.

I have to admit... it was the cover that drew me in.
Crazy, I know, but I have a thing for both pink hair and unusual eyes. Combine them into a single cover image, and... yeah. I'm totally sold.
Thankfully, this ebook was more than just a pretty cover.
Sanguine eyes had a fast-paced storyline, great dialogue, and quirky characters. It was easy to lose myself within the story, setting real-life on hold for a few minutes at a time. Or, at least it was easy after I got enough of the backstory to go with the flow.
Stepping into the middle of a series is rarely a good idea.
I missed a great deal of action that occurred in books one and two. So much so that I had to pace myself in the first few chapters in order to let myself become accustomed to the world, and to the events that I missed.
This is not something I would consider a flaw in the writing.
Rather, this told me that a person who began the series from book one would be overjoyed to not have to go through several paragraphs of regurgitated story in each installment - something that always frustrates me, no matter how much I understand why a writer would do so.
You know... because of crazy people like me that start in the middle. Oops.
Starting in the middle of the series or not, however, one thing was abundantly clear. Jazz kicks some serious butt - and does it with style! Serious character development went into her personality, and I enjoyed every line of dialogue that she took part in. She was believable... and pretty awesome, too.
